The Baby in the Basket
Now a man of the house of Levi took as his wife a daughter of Levi.
And she became with child and gave birth to a son;
and when she saw that he was a beautiful child, she kept him secretly for three months.
And when she was no longer able to keep him secret, she made him a basket out of the stems of water-plants, pasting sticky earth over it to keep the water out;
and placing the baby in it she put it among the plants by the edge of the Nile.
And his sister took her place at a distance to see what would become of him.
Now Pharaoh's daughter came down to the Nile to take a bath, while her women were walking by the riverside;
and she saw the basket among the river-plants, and sent her servant-girl to get it.
Opening it, she saw the child, and he was crying.
And she had pity on him, and said, This is one of the Hebrew's children.
Then his sister said to Pharaoh's daughter, May I go and get you one of the Hebrew women to give him the breast?
And Pharaoh's daughter said to her, Go.
And the girl went and got the child's mother.
Pharaoh's daughter said to her, Take the child away and give it milk for me, and I will give you payment.
And the woman took the child and gave it milk at her breast.
And when the child was older, she took him to Pharoah's daughter and he became her son, and she gave him the name Moses, Because, she said, I took him out of the water.
It was a simple trick to leave the baby in the basket among the water-plants, but it was also a very wise one.
His mother took her chance and the baby was safe.
It is said that this daughter of Pharaoh became a great ruler in Egypt.
Moses was given the very best training that anyone had in those days.
As a young man he became an authority in that country.
His teaching would give him knowledge of the arts of war, religion, science, medicine and all the rest of the great knowledge of Egypt.
But, he kept his love for his own people.
He made an attempt to keep them safe even when they were prisoners without any rights.
This got him into serious trouble and he had to go away from Egypt.
He was made to go across the dry sands that were around Egypt on all sides, through the dust, the flies and the strong winds to the land of Midian.
他必须去横跨是在埃及附近在所有边, 通过尘土, 飞行和猛烈的风对Midian 土地的干燥沙子。
That was a bitter punishment.
In that country he became a keeper of sheep for fourty years.
He was fourty years old when he left Egypt, so he had become 80 years old when he was given the direction to take his own nation across to their own country.
That place is given the name of "The Promised Land" in English.
Moses was a great leader with matchless learning and ability.
He had the approval of God, and he was dependent upon God for all that he did.
As a reward he is now one of the greatest men in the world's history.
He gave us many of our laws, much of the world's great religions, and an example that is an inspiration to us all.
His was a long, full life, for he died with the account of him that "Moses at his death was a hundred and twenty years old: his eye had not become clouded, or his natural force become feeble".
These notes give you practice with the use of the words you have already learned.
They make use of those words, even though that puts a limit on what can be said.
