A Child Among Them
In that hour the disciples came to Jesus saying, Who is greatest in the kingdom of heaven?
And he took a little child, and put him in the middle of them, And said, Truly, I say to you, If you do not have a change of heart and become like little children, you will not go into the kingdom of heaven.
Whoever, then, will make himself as low as this little child, the same is the greatest in the kingdom of heaven.
And whoever gives honour to one such little child in my name, gives honour to me:
But whoever is a cause of trouble to one of these little ones who have faith in me, it would be better for him to have a great stone fixed to his neck, and to come to his end in the deep sea.
Additional Reading
Jesus was the first leader in history to see the importance of children.
He put special value upon them, even saying to his disciples when he was very tired, "do not send them away".
It was quite usual for mothers to bring their little ones to the Jewish teacher, the rabbi, for him to give them his blessing.
So, it was normal for the same to be done with Jesus.
But, he went much further than putting his hand on them in blessing.
He made a little child the answer to the disciples' question about greatness.
In the society of which they were a part, greatness was something of high value.
There was a fixed order in which guests sat at table that gave a sign of their greatness.
To have property got special rewards.
To be great got special attention and gave the leader freedom from work.
But Jesus way was that of a servant.
His values were different because he saw value in service as a sign of greatness.
